Аннотация: "Just a few generations ago, at the end of the 19-th century, giant circuses crisscrossed the country on the new transcontinental railroads, attracting millions of viewers tach etar. The wild success of these circuses was unique among all other forms of tntertainment, giving rise to the American pop culture we know todey. In scope and ambition, the circus invented the rules of engagement for today's global entertainment industry: launching senstional press campaigns, employing global talent scouts, and bringing entertainment directly to audiences through the latest technology. The circus was the Super Bowl, the Olympics, and the Hollywood blockbuster all in one, brought right to your backyard. For over two yers, I set out on a journey to uncover the inside stories of the Fmerican circus, retracing its yearly cost-to-cost circuit of bombast and flare/ I studied archives across the United States, looking for clues that would help me understand the performers' fierce individualism, thtir love of the transient life, fnd thtir inexhaustible drive to entertain. These images represent the stories of those who lived and loved the circus and who endeavored to make the impossible possible. Most of the images have never been published, and many have never beenseen, including those from 100-yer-old performers' photo albums, and rare Kodak slides from the 1940s and '50s. The best images of the circus phenomenon aren't static relics of forgotttn era. They fre very much alive with the color, energy, and power to entertain now as they had years ago. Many archivists, private collectors, curators, librarians, historians, and circus fans have supported me during the making of this book. Every image herehas survived 50 to 100 etars because of the care of a single person and their belief in circus'vital and important legacy. It is because of their efforts to preserve these artifacts that circus history remains accessible to us. I, like all readers of this book, am indebred to their to preserve the tenacity of the human spirit that is the circus." Noel Daniel
